The mission of AAVS is to end the use of animals in science through education, advocacy, and the development of alternative methods. Founded in 1883, the American Anti-Vivisection Society (AAVS) is the first non-profit animal advocacy and educational organization in the United States dedicated to ending experimentation on animals in research, testing, and education.
We work with individuals, students and parents, educators, grassroots groups, corporate and government decision makers, and members of the scientific community.
The Alternatives Research & Development Foundation, a U.S. leader in the funding and promotion of alternatives to the use of laboratory animals in research, testing, and education, is currently soliciting research proposals for its 2016 Alternatives Research Grant Program. For over 20 years, this innovative program has created opportunities for scientists who have interest and expertise in alternatives research.

Sentient, The Veterinary Institute for Animal Ethics is an independent forum and advocacy group that aims to bring the recognition of animals as sentient beings to the national agenda and to ensure that their needs are appropriately and ethically addressed by governments, industry and the public. As a veterinary driven body, Sentient offers scientific reflection within an ethical framework to collaborate with the community in furthering the animal protection movement.
Altweb, the Alternatives to Animal Testing Web Site, was created to serve as a gateway to alternatives news, information, and resources on the Internet and beyond. Altweb now is the U.S. home of the journal ALTEX: Alternatives to Animal Experimentation, which is the official publication of the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT).
Altweb is intended to serve:
- Biomedical researchers
- Industry
- The international alternatives community
- The international regulatory community(ies)
- IACUCs and other institutional groups that review animal protocols
- The animal welfare community
- Individuals and groups who work with laboratory animals (technicians, veterinarians, etc.)

Altweb has five practical goals:
- To assist scientists and others seeking to conduct a search for alternatives methods.
- to serve as a CRP—”central reference point”—for alternatives information, publications, databases, calendars, and other resources.
- to support the creation and maintenance of new alternative resources as needed, when no other organization can/will do so
- to promote the use of alternatives resources by publicizing them on the site and through e-mail or other outreach
- to facilitate communication and collaboration among members of the alternatives community, in particular those who work in database or information management.
The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) is an independent registered charity that works with the animal welfare science community worldwide to develop and promote improvements in the welfare of farm, companion, laboratory, captive wild animals and those with which we interact in the wild, through scientific and educational activity.
UFAW
- Promotes and supports developments in the science and technology that underpin advances in animal welfare.
- Promotes education in animal care and welfare.
- Provides information, organises symposia, conferences and meetings, publishes books, videos, technical reports and the international quarterly scientific journal Animal Welfare.
- Provides expert advice to governments and other organisations and helps to draft and amend laws and guidelines.
- Enlists the energies of animal keepers, scientists, veterinarians, lawyers and others who care about animals.
